More than two and a half million people of East Indian heritage live in the United States, 75% of them born in India. Palomino Productions' timely, award-winning DVD, "Of Beauty & Deities: Music & Dance of India," provides a cultural as well as artistic introduction to India in its Hindu ramifications, along with insight into Indians abroad, part of the "Indian diaspora." We look at these primarily through the perspective of the southern Indian classical dance and music of bharatanatyam. The DVD features Kalanjali : Dances of India led by K.P. and Katherine Kunhiraman. Performers come from the San Francisco Bay Area, and southern India. The lead artists are K.P. Yeshoda (dance) and Sasidaran (singer), both of India. Part of the series “The Languages of Sound & Movement,” this DVD is especially appropriate for music & dance professionals, students (middle school through lower division college/university) and people interested in South Asia. A CD with supplementary materials is also available that includes classroom discussion questions, research topics, quiz, and a For the Educator sheet. |
